Project description

The task

The Netto online shop is operated by NeS GmbH. As the e-commerce subsidiary of Netto Marken-Discount, it is responsible for the digital business of one of Germany’s largest food discounters. The product range is growing, order volumes are high, and in the online grocery sector, reliable delivery times and prompt customer service responses are key to whether customers return. Whether this works depends on the ERP system running in the background. At NeS, this has been the case for more than ten years diva.

Diva has been running on Microsoft Dynamics NAV since 2016. During this time, numerous bespoke developments were added, which made significant changes to the standard system. From a business perspective, they served their purpose. Technically, however, this resulted in a system whose releases required ever-increasing effort and which became more difficult to maintain with each passing year.

In 2023, NeS drew the necessary conclusions and decided to switch to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The company was looking for an architecture that could be scaled and kept up to date without requiring any extra effort.

Solution

The realisation

The project began in autumn 2023 and went live on schedule in June 2025, after around one and a half years. The focus was on the systematic technical separation of standard functions and bespoke processes. Elements that had previously been closely intertwined had to be partially disentangled and reintegrated into the diva standard.

On-site workshops and comprehensive integration tests ensured a shared understanding of the requirements. A team from collana’s subsidiary, MAC IT-Solutions, supported the migration directly at NeS in Regensburg. The first day of live operation ran smoothly, with over 10,000 orders processed.

From a technical perspective, Netto is sticking with diva, now based on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. New additions include a supplier portal from MAC and collana solutions – which also forms part of the group – with over 200 connected partners, a ticketing system with a centralised customer history, integration with PAYBACK and other payment methods, as well as revamped processes for accounts payable and invoice verification. The factors in collana’s favour were its deepening understanding of processes and the prospect of being able to implement special requirements within a standardised framework suitable for future releases.

„This project is yet another example of what can be achieved when we work together as partners. Together, we have overcome some challenging hurdles. With the new system architecture, we are now well-positioned for the future.“

Result / Impact

This is how the problem was solved

All customer-related processes are now managed via a single database. Customer service teams can view enquiries, history and resolution paths all in one place, without having to switch between systems. This can be measured in several ways: enquiries are processed around 22 per cent faster, significantly more cases are resolved at the first point of contact, and internal queries have fallen by up to 15 per cent.

In the day-to-day running of the online shop, the impact is evident in order processing. The error rate has fallen by a double-digit percentage, meaning manual intervention is required less frequently. On the supplier side, the portal streamlines the onboarding of new partners, and external systems can be integrated with less effort.

This collaboration goes back a long way. The ticketing system that NeS uses today was originally developed in collaboration with Netto’s service centre and has long been part of the diva standard. What began as a requirement from a single customer has thus become a feature for everyone diva Became a user.

The most challenging part of the project was integrating the custom developments back into the standard system. This effort pays off even after go-live, as it means that every future update will require less work.
